Cristiano Ronaldo will miss Portugal’s friendly in Gabon on Wednesday after sustaining a gash over his left eye in Real Madrid’s La Liga match with Levante on Sunday night which left the striker with blurred vision.
Levante defender David Navarro caught Ronaldo
in the face with his elbow in the early stages of the match, opening up a
wound. Ronaldo initially played on after being patched up on the side of the
pitch and scored Real
Madrid’s 21st-minute opener in a 2-1 victory. But he had to be
replaced at halftime after suffering problems with his eyesight.
“It was an accident, at no time did I try to cause harm to him,” insisted
Navarro, who has a history of violent conduct and was once banned for seven
months after breaking the nose of Inter Milan’s Nicolas Burdisso with a
punch.
Other incidents include a horrific studs-up challenge on former Real Madrid
midfielder Luis Figo and an off-the-ball stamp on Barcelona forward Lionel
Messi’s ankle.
Navarro contacted Ronaldo yesterday to wish him a speedy recovery, but the cut
will keep him out of the Gabon match.
